1. Pie maker to create 80 new jobs after securing financing package

   A Bristol-based pie manufacturer will create up to 80 new jobs as it plans to open five new restaurants after securing a £1.4m finance package from HSBC, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

   Pieminister will use the funding package to open and fit-out the new sites as part of the company’s strategy of targeting university cities in the UK, but also for refinancing existing sites in Manchester and Trentham in the Midlands, bringing the company’s portfolio of restaurants and cafes to 16.

   The company was co-founded in 2003 by brothers-in-law Jon Simon and Tristan Hogg and its existing restaurants and cafes are in Bristol, Nottingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Oxford and London. is said to be considering Bath, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield for the new sites. It could also open another restaurant in Bristol if the right location becomes available.

   Jon Simon, co-founder and managing director of Pieminister, said: "HSBC has believed in and supported Pieminister since we made our first pies back in 2003. The five new stores, which wouldn’t have been possible without this latest round of funding from the bank, will underpin the next stage of our growth plans and will help to increase our turnover by around £4.5m a year.

2. New medical spa set to open in Bristol

3. Plans put forward for £180m redevelopment of derelict area in Bristol

   A developer has submitted an application for a mixed-use scheme at Redcliff Quarter in Bristol which could contribute 400-500 jobs and an estimated £7m per annum into the local economy once completed, a news report in the local business media has been able to find.

   Change Real Estate director Ron Persaud said: "Our proposed plans will revive this underutilised area of the city with a vibrant and high quality ’18-hour city’ development, with its own, unique identity that embraces the character and heritage of the neighbourhood.

   "We underwent public consultation before Christmas and have been working closely with the local authority to reach this point; we have listened carefully to what everyone has to say, resulting in the plans we are now submitting.

   "Redcliff Quarter will become a new destination in the heart of the city, close to excellent public transport networks and occupying a prime location close to the Harbourside, and Bristol’s business and retail quarters."

   The company acquired the 2.5 acre site, which lies in the heart of the Redcliffe conservation area, between St Thomas Street, Redcliff Street and Three Queens Lane, in 2014.

4. Major discount retailer to build new 600,000 sq ft distribution centre in Bristol

   One of the UK’s (and Europe’s) best-known discount retailers has revealed plans to open a new 600,000 sq ft distribution centre in Bristol, replacing its existing site in Weston-Super-Mare, a news report in the local business media has found.

   Low-cost retailer Lidl has acquired the 33-acre site on Central Park in Avonmouth from Delta Properties for a new regional distribution centre (RDC).

   It is the fourth new distribution centre announced in the past 12 months and follows the recent submission of a planning application for a 500,000 facility near Exeter.

   The Bristol-based RDC will be double the size Lidl’s existing warehouse in Weston-Super-Mare and will allow it to accommodate the scale of future operations within the region as part of its UK expansion plans.

   Existing employees have been told that their roles will be retained at the new premises, with further jobs also expected to be created.

   Adrienne Howells, Lidl UK head of warehouse expansion, said: "It’s an incredibly exciting time for Lidl as our sales performance continues to outperform the market. We are therefore working hard to ensure that the right infrastructure is in place for us to manage increased customer demand.

   "We have big ambitions within the South West of England and our proposed new RDCs, both in Bristol and East Devon, will help to fulfil our expansion plans whilst continuing to service our existing stores in the regions."

5. Jobs saved as electronics manufacturer is bought out of administration

   More than 30 jobs have been secured after a Poole-based electronics manufacturer has been purchased out of administration, a news report in the local business media has been able to find.

   Simon Girling, BDO business restructuring partner, added: "We are pleased to have concluded the sale of the business and assets of the Company, preserving 34 jobs.

   "The company had suffered from recent cash flow issues and the sale was the best option to secure the future of the business, enabling it to move forward on a more secure financial footing."

6. Plans approved for Bristol trampoline park

   Plans to build a new trampoline park in Bristol have been approved by the local authority, a news report in the local business media has found.

   Alpha Bounce, which trades as Freedog, opened its first trampoline park in Swindon in July 2015 and is now proposing a second site in Bristol, which will create up to 65 new local jobs.

   Along with the trampolines, the 31,000 sq ft unit would feature party rooms, a café and viewing area. A total of 55 car parking spaces would be provided.

   "The proposal will create skilled jobs in the area, support the local economy and provide local people with an alternative and enjoyable form of exercise close to the city centre."

7. New retail park in Newquay set to receive planning permission

   Plans for a mixed-use scheme featuring retail, food and drink, restaurant and hotel facilities are set to be given the green light by Cornwall councillors, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

    

   Kingsley Developments International and CPG Projects Developments have submitted an application for the scheme on a 10.6-acre block of agricultural land at Trevithick Manor Farm.

    

   The site is located adjacent to a development of 350 homes currently under construction by Persimmon.

   It is expected that the development would support the creation of 320 full time jobs, however, the council’s retail consultant Bilfinger GVA has suggested that some may also be lost in the town centre.

8. Cornwall leisure operator creates new jobs after opening new Aqua Park

   The Retallack Resort and Spa near Padstow has invested in a new Total Wipeout-style course that will be ready for the Easter Holidays, opening on the 25 March for guests and locals.

   First aid and open water lifeguarding training has been organised to all the new recruits, providing them with all the right qualifications and experience.

   Darren Squires, from South West First Aid Training, said: "The team had limited first aid or open water lifeguarding training, so they were really thrown in at the deep end so to speak.

   "After an intense six day course, consisting of four separate assessments, everyone has passed and are now ready for the last stage of onsite training once the equipment is installed."

9. Retailer to create 250 new jobs across the South West

   One of the UK’s best-know retailers has revealed plans to invest £8m in new stores across the South West that could create up to 250 jobs, a news report has found.

   The retailer, which currently has 300 stores in the South West employing around 5,000 staff, plans to open at least ten new shops at sites in Somerset, Wiltshire, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall this year. Each would create 25 new full and part time jobs.

   The Co-op will also spend £4m on 30 new funeral homes, creating an additional 60 new jobs.

   Co-op Group chief executive Richard Pennycook said: "We are delighted to be making such a significant investment in the South West of England.

   "New stores, more jobs, innovative partnerships with local suppliers and a £125m investment nationally in lowering the price of everyday essentials is great news for customers and communities across the South West and beyond. It’s a positive sign that we are getting on with the job of rebuilding the Co-op for our members."

10. Speculative business park development receives planning permission
