1. Up to 170 jobs could be lost as West Somerset paper mill closes

   Around 170 employees are in danger of losing their jobs after a paper mill in Watchet, West Somerset, is set to close, a news source has revealed.

   The 250-year old Wansbrough paper mill is owned by packaging company DS Smith and is the main employer in the town. The company has entered into a consultation with employs ahead of the proposed closure in December 2015.

   West Somerset Council has said it was working with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and doing "all in its power to help employees".

   A statement from DS Smith said: "This announcement in no way reflects the commitment and efforts of our employees who continue to support our business.

   "We will work closely with union and employee representatives throughout the consultation process to ensure the best possible outcome for all parties."

2. Plans to build 100 student flats in Bristol listed building set for approval

   Two grade II-listed property located at 37-39 and 41 Corn Street in Bristol are set to be transformed into 100 student flats under plans set to be approved by the Bristol City Council, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

3. Developer secures planning permission for building 70 new homes in Swindon

   A residential developer has managed to obtain planning permission for building 70 new homes on the site of a former office development in Swindon, a news report in the local business media can reveal.

   Bellway Homes will build the new two-, three- and four-bedroom properties on the former Westlea Campus site, with the wider development plans also including a supermarket.

4. Up to 100 jobs in danger at Weymouth-based engineering business

5. Plans approved for first stage of Sherford community development

   The first phase of a project to build a new community in Sherford, which will eventually include 5,500 houses and 890,000 sq ft of schools, shops, community spaces and leisure facilities, has finally received planning permission, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

   South Hams District Council and Plymouth City Council have given reserved matters consent for the initial phase, allowing construction to start on the first 570 homes, plus work such as streets and cycleways, playing fields, civic spaces and local environmental considerations.

6. Dairy products manufacturer opens new eco-friendly factory, creates local jobs

7. New student 791-bedroom village to be built in Cheltenham

8. Plans approved for 115-bedroom hotel on Eden Project site near St Austell

9. Football club reveals stadium grounds redevelopment plans

   A football club has revealed plans to redevelop their stadium grounds, which will include a student housing scheme on adjoining land, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

    

   Exeter City FC said the plans to redevelop their St James Park ground, were at the "very earliest stages of formulation" and would "significantly" increase the spectator facilities.

10. Hundreds of jobs at risk as insurance company reveals restructuring plans

    Hundreds of employees could be made redundant as one of the UK’s largest insurance companies revealed plans to close one of its sites and downsize another, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

    Aviva plans to save £225m by the end of 2017 and in order to do so, the company will exit its offices in Salisbury by the end of 2016, transferring the work to other parts of the UK. There are currently 450 employees working on this site.

    The firm will also close its bases in Stretford and Salford and reduce its presence in Manchester city centre and Dorking.

    In a statement, Aviva said:

    "We appreciate this is disappointing and difficult news for some of our employees and we are helping our people through this process, providing a range of support and advice, and consulting with employee representative bodies about these changes.

    "The changes will happen between now and the end of 2016 and we will look to minimise the impact by offering redeployment opportunities where possible.”
