Schools helped with truancy using simple PC-based clocking system

A Falmouth mum is in danger of being imprisoned after she allegedly failed to make sure her three children were going to school. An arrest warrant has been issued for Claudia Jane Ward, of Meadowbank Road. The 41-year-old is charged with allowing three of her children to truant between September 4 and December 7 last year, Truro Magistrates’ Court heard last Friday (February 8, 2013). The offence is punishable with imprisonment.

A 200m exclusion zone was put in place around a farm in Tavistock due to fears there were acetylene cylinders inside the buildings. Fire crews rushed to the fire in Collaton Lane in Tavistock early on Sunday (February 3, 2013) after being called to the farm buildings just after 01:00 GMT. Two neighbouring homes were also evacuated and firefighters expected the exclusion zone to remain in place for the rest of the day. Investigations into the fire have started.
A well-known alleyway in Portishead has been compared to a toilet because of all the rubbish dumped there. Bob Bull said he was upset with dog mess being left in the thoroughfare, which runs between The Deans and West Hill. Mr Bull, who lives nearby the lane, said:
The Wiltshire workers who are being made redundant by Honda will leave their posts by the end of April. The personnel who are headed for the axe will be picked on factors like the quality of their work; length of service; time keeping; disciplinary record and previous appraisals. The workforce has received a letter from Honda warning that their job is at risk. About 50 per cent will go from the production line and the other half from office staff. 
A man attempted twice to break into a Coleford pub. He used items including a concrete block to gain access to the building in Market Place early on Wednesday but was ultimately unsuccessful. PC Michelle Screen said: “I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area of St John Street in Coleford between the hours of 4am and 5am.” Members of the public who have information should call 101, quoting incident 84 of January 16.
BBC Radio Bristol’s 104.6 FM plus other digital radio and television channels in the south-western area have been disrupted by damage to the Bath transmitter. The fire in three sheds at the site in Bathampton resulted in a power cut. Avon and Somerset Police believe the fire, which was reported at 05:50 GMT today (Thursday), was started deliberately. In April last year a transmitter on Dundry Lane in Bristol was also attacked, cutting short radio broadcasts.
A second Christmas postal strike has taken place by south-western workers. The 24-hour action meant there was no deliveries by south Bristol postal workers at the depot in Mead Street, Bedminster, which serves properties in the BS4 (Knowle) and BS14 (Hengrove) postcode areas, between 00:01 and 23.59 on Monday (December 17). Bristol union area official David Wilshire said there would be no further strikes before Christmas. He added: 
A Cornish MP has approved the news that plans for regional NHS pay will not go ahead in the South West. Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat MP for St Austell and Newquay, said he opposed the proposals because he believed “hard-working public sector employees deserve a fair wage for the work they do, no matter where they live”. He added that the development was a “victory for people power”. Some of the NHS consortium wanted to introduce local pay deals.
More than half the public toilets in the Bath area could be shut. The Bath and North East Somerset Councillor in charge of the issue, cabinet member for neighbourhoods David Dixon (Lib Dem, Oldfield), said: “We have to look really, really closely at what we provide with the limited resources we have got.” In Larkhall, residents have already printed petition forms to save the facilities in the square and forms are likely to be available at the New Oriel Hall.
