A North Cornish meat processing firm has closed down, it emerged at the end of last week. A business based in Launceston, Kensey Vale Meats processed and distributed meat to independent butchers, farm shops and bakeries throughout Cornwall and Devon. On the news of the firm Launceston councillor Alex Folkes said: “I asked the new cabinet member for a meeting to discuss business in Launceston last week and this news only goes to emphasise how much we need to pull together.”

The joint administrators at a leading retailer say 42 staff are being made redundant at a call centre in Clevedon. However workers at other sites in the South West will be relieved that no lay-offs have come at Comet distribution centres or stores, which continue to trade as normal and no further redundancies are planned. Administrator Neville Kahn on behalf of Deloitte said: 
A police station has opened in Devonport six years after it was given the green light. The station is in place of buildings in Marlborough Street which had originally been a bank when it was built almost 60 years ago. The new station will house nearly 150 Devon and Cornwall police staff. Chief Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith said after the long wait to move in: “Marlborough Street just wasn’t fit for purpose. It provided us with poor quality and disjointed accommodation.”
The Permarin and Exchequer Quay loos could be saved in Penryn after the prospect of the town council being given a grant towards maintaining them. The town council had agreed to take on the running of the Permarin facilities, but only the disabled toilets on the quay. It was revealed it would cost £10,669 a year for both sets of toilets to remain fully open. If just the Permarin WCs and the disabled toilets were run it would cost about £6,000.
First Devon and Cornwall bus bosses say they will seek to settle a pay dispute as soon as possible. The management statement came after 300 of First Group’s 673 employees took part in the ballot, with 85 per cent voting in favour of strike action this week. Chris Bainbridge, First’s service delivery director, said the company was after compromise. She said: 
A Gloucestershire engineering company is to officially open a new healthcare manufacturing plant. Renishaw – which supplies products for a variety of industries in the measuring equipment field – bought the unused site in Wales in July last year. Renishaw numbers more than 3,000 people in its workforce, chiefly at five sites in Gloucestershire, and is one of the county’s largest employers. The firm hopes to locate much of its future manufacturing at the new plant as well as overall expansion.
All of the beds at Poltair Hospital, near Penzance, are to be closed in the short term because of staff shortages. The closures were as a result of an operational review, its managers Peninsula Community Health said. Staff would be redeployed to hospitals in Helston and St Ives to boost their rosters. Health bosses also said outpatient clinics at Poltair would continue as normal, adding: 
A union visiting Derriford Hospital staff stated that possible pay cuts were not constructive. The Devon hospital trust is attempting to dig itself out of a financial mire, but the GMB said it is going the “wrong way” about it. Derriford, part of the South West Pay Consortium, currently spends a massive 60 per cent of its budget on wages each year. The GMB remarked: 
Thousands of households in Devon suffered power cut after Newton Abbot sub-station was hit by fire. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue confirmed that crews were called to the facility at just before 11:00 BST today (September 19, 2012). The company Western Power Distribution said there had been a high-voltage failure affecting nearly 20,000 customers in the Torquay and Newton Abbot area. The fire service said crews rescued a total of six people from three lifts in Newton Abbot.
The toilets at Exchequer Quay in Penryn could be reprieved. It was revealed at last week’s meeting of the town council that a local resident asked councillors why the toilets had to close. Adrian Grigg pointed out that there are 49 occupied businesses on Commercial Road alone. He commented:
