The Rodbourne Cheney School has fully reopened after lead thefts caused structural damage. Thieves had struck from the Swindon school’s roof. A spokeswoman for the school said the lead was stolen during the Easter holidays and temporary repairs were made. Heavy rain then stopped the permanent repairs from being carried out, she added. It meant the school closed to reception, year one and two for a few days.

Thousands of NHS staff in South West England could be soon working longer hours for less pay according to a leaked document. The South West could be among the first areas to have regional pay in the health service introduced. The document, by the newly-formed South West Pay, Terms and Conditions Consortium, is marked ‘For discussion only, not to be forwarded’. Nursing representatives replied that NHS staff do the same work, whether they are in Truro, Torquay or Tynecastle.
Agricultural jobs in Somerset have shot up by almost 60 per cent in three years, according to a county council report. Meanwhile, overall employment in the county fell from 252,600 to 240,300 in the same three-year-period. There were 10,100 people employed in the agriculture sector in March 2011 compared with 6,400 in March 2008, an increase of 57.8%. In 2011 agricultural engineering exports, like tractors and other machinery, from Somerset went up by nearly a fifth.
Bridport now has three toilets thanks to a new convenience put up in the South Street car park. The building programme complements the district council run facilities at the bus station and in South Street and the Bridport Town Council run toilets in the refurbished town hall. Planning permission for the new toilets in South Street was granted in July 2011. The new facilities mean the district council will continue to pay for the operation of two toilets in Bridport.
Asbestos waste that was accidentally uncovered from an old mineshaft near Redruth will be removed. The Environment Agency (EA) has promised to clear the waste which was excavated during an operation to recover the body of a horse which had fallen into the shaft in Scorrier in February. The EA said there was a “relatively small amount” to be removed. Resident of Scorrier Christine Beith said local people had 
Staff based at an NHS Direct office in Exeter have been taking action over plans to replace the service with a new NHS phone line. The off-duty workers have been working unpaid to highlight the need for qualified responders. The personnel involved in the action at the centre on the Sowton Industrial Estate, who were supported by the Unison union, said the new service would employ fewer nurses and more unqualified call handlers, who would just send patients elsewhere.
In Torquay the National Union of Teachers voted to ballot for strike action on the issue of regional pay. At its annual conference the union said it would walk out if any firm plans are brought in for public sector workers. At the Devon meeting, NUT delegates agreed its leaders should put a resolution or amendment to the TUC’s conference this autumn to develop “
Devon and Cornwall Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said plans had been put in place for when officers are needed to cover Olympic events in the region. Around 65 police officers per day will be sent to the Weymouth and Portland sailing venue. He said the deployment had been planned, with some leave cancelled, adding:

The NHS survey for 2011 also showed that hospital staff in Cornwall are among the most stressed and pressured in the country. RCHT Chief Executive Lezli Boswell said the results were “disappointing” and added: 
Today (March 16, 2012) clubs and bars in the Newquay resort are being encouraged to install identity scanners. Devon and Cornwall Police believe the scanners will stop people from using fake IDs. The scanners have already been installed at two local venues. Insp Ian Drummond-Smith said: “It’s also a really good way of making sure staff are not inadvertently allowing under-18s into their premises that might have quite a good forgery.”
