Workers at the former St Ives Web printing facility in Roche are being consulted over cost savings. The company Wyndeham which has taken over the plant wants to overcome what it called “the inherent disadvantages” of its West Country location. The firm has already closed the Plymouth St Ives facility it took on board in its March buyout, with the loss of around 300 jobs. It announced in June that a further 58 jobs will go in Roche.

Cornwall Council is going over plans to find a further £50 million in budget cuts at the same time as helping to boost the local economy. The Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil, David Laws, has asked for a meeting with chief executive of BAE Systems Ian King to discuss the scale of job losses in the town. There are proposals to cut 206 jobs from BAE Systems in Bristol and Somerset, and Mr Laws said these were “bad news”. He also commented: “This is a very important Yeovil business, with exactly the type of jobs we want to attract and retain in our area – high skills and good pay.”
Bristol Hospital is one the nearly two-dozen NHS trusts in danger of financial meltdown due to a finance agreement. The trust is one of 100 involved in similar privately-financed building schemes in the NHS. The idea was originally introduced by the Conservatives under John Major, but the use of the scheme vastly increased in the NHS by Labour. The combined value of these projects is £11.4 billion and the NHS will pay back more than £70bn on current projections.
Police have been warning businesses and depots to remain extra vigilant as over the weekend thieves struck at two locations. Vans were broken into which were parked in the yard of an industrial estate in Eastbrook Road in Gloucester plus a van in Stoke Road in the Bishop’s Cleeve area. Furthermore, on Wednesday night it was reported that a car part had been stolen from Newent Business Park at the end of August.
There is the possibility of up to 150 jobs disappearing in Swindon. Nokia Siemens is getting rid of about a third of its 400 research staff at Kembrey Park. The news follows the announcement in May that Virgin Media would be closing its call centre in Trowbridge which puts 450 people out of work. In April Vodafone announced its proposals to close a contact centre in Trowbridge at the cost of 200 jobs.
Anyone who can identify the people in footage issued of the Bristol riots is being asked to contact police. Violent unrest began in the Stokes Croft and St Pauls area of the city on Monday, August 8 and there was smaller scale disorder in the city the following day. The newly released CCTV images show crowds advancing along Surrey Street between Portland and Brunswick Square. Police said they are currently arresting more people in connection with the Bristol disturbances. 
The Orchard pub in Bristol Road, Quedgeley, was destroyed as flames ripped through its two floors. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service had 14 vehicles tackling the fire. It had broken out in the early hours of the morning. Group manager Richard Smith was the firefighter in charge, and said: "It was well alight when we got here. We had the call saying people were trapped inside but one woman had managed to get out before we arrived and no-one else was in there.”
