A £20 million plant is being built at Northacre in Westbury which will treat up to 60,000 tonnes of the South-West’s household waste per annum. The proportion of the county’s refuse being diverted away from landfill will increase from about 63 per cent to more than 80 per cent. Alan Pardoe, chairman of the plant’s builders the Hills group, said he was "delighted that construction is starting on the Hills’ Northacre facility".

There could be more deaths after the closure of two coastguard stations – this was the verdict of a man whose nephew drowned in Devon. John Smith’s nephew, Mark Woodward, drowned at Rapparee Cove in Ilfracombe in 1989. He said he believed the closure of Hartland Coastguard Station before this had contributed to Mark’s death. Mr Smith added he believed local knowledge would be lost once Brixham and Swansea coastguard stations closed.
A new store in Exeter will create 120 more jobs than originally planned. The firm John Lewis was going to take over five floors of a building in Sidwell Street, but has now been given approval to occupy all 11 floors. Fore Street surf shop owner John Monk said: "It’s not a benefit for us. People have to go down a hill to reach us – we need promotion to get people over the hill." Exeter City Council said the move will help all city shops.
Crews have tackled a blaze at Writhlington School near Radstock. Avon Fire and Rescue Service said it was not yet known how the fire – which took place in the assembly hall – had started. The building was evacuated of all the 1,450 students at the school in Somerset. Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Stephanie Mounsey said: "The firefighters will continue to work to cut away the roof space to ensure all the fire hotspots are fully out.”
‘Serious safety concerns’ have been raised about government plans to close some UK coastguard centres – one of those at risk being Lee on Solent and Portland. Maritime and Coastguard Agency head Sir Alan Massey said change was necessary but safety concerns must be addressed. He said: "The risks were identified as being ‘you’re going to lose local knowledge and that’ll put lives at risk’. That you’ll lose some of your experienced personnel and that will dilute the expertise that’s around."
In a boost to the South West market, almost 700 posts will be created when relocating to Porton Down. The jobs are being moved to the military research laboratory at Salisbury following a defence review. The local MP is battling for the future of 800 staff at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) at Porton Down. Salisbury Conservative MP John Glen said: "I expect the jobs at HPA Porton to remain too and I’m fighting for that."
Devon and Cornwall’s rural areas will be hit the most by police spending cuts, the area’s police federation claims. There are fears the measures will mean fewer community officers. Nigel Rabbits, from the Devon and Cornwall Police Federation, said: "This is a direct result of government cuts. Common sense says that with less resources there will be less police officers out and about in rural areas.” The police force said local policing teams would remain within existing stations.
A Trowbridge car sales company is offering a reward after an arson attack at the premises. Eve Aylesbury of AMS Cars said the fire caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and added she wanted those responsible for Saturday’s (May 28) fire to be caught. "We are absolutely furious as we know we’re going to be penalised by our insurance company,” she said, adding: "We’re definitely going to reward whoever gives information which leads to an arrest.”
The number of cabinet members on Gloucestershire County Council will be reduced by two to help save thousands of pounds.
