West Somerset Coroner West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose described the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) as a "political matter," but he said hospitals were evidently "running into problems” over restrictions on working hours. He made the comments as he recorded a narrative verdict (not attributing the cause to a named individual) in the case of Roland Holbrow, who was admitted to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton but died by the time a doctor saw him. Changes introduced due to the EWTD have severely reduced junior doctors’ working hours, resulting in doctors having to supervise more patients.
